Butterfly Bath

This rock was specially chosen for the top of the shade garden wall. Ed sealed it so that it would hold water, and give the butterflies, and the birds for that matter a place to bathe on a nice hot summer day. It has water in it today. It is a beautiful day, and I did see one yellow butterfly. Still it's probably a little cool for bathing. Perhaps everyone had a sufficient shower yesterday with all the heavy rains that a bath is not high on their list of things to do. Next summer though, I hope the butterflies will flock to our nice puddle. It will wait there until then.

Cute b'fly bath. I'm crazy about stones, and those with depressions are my fav.

I love that you featured this. I think many people who want to attract butterflies to their garden usually only focus on plants. Water and the heat that they get from the stone is also important. I love this post! You will have to take pictures next year of the butterflies flocking to the water.

Becky,

I've been butterfly gardening for 12+ years. Your bath would be best to attract birds and other wildlife. To get butterflies into water, you would do better with a mud or sand puddle. You see male butterflies collect minerals in mud and sand for reproduction.

I can do a mud puddle. Thanks for the advice!

Fresh scat seems to function as a butterfly attractant. I frequently see butterflies on droppings left in the lane. Scat on the wall may be a hard sell but the bird droppings are unavoidable.
